SOP - Anatomy & Physiology
The art and skill involved in orthotics and prosthetics is based on a number of core sciences. An understanding of the base sciences is necessary to optimize patient outcomes in the selection and customization of prefabricated devices, or the fabrication of custom orthotic and prosthetic devices. Much of that scientific knowledge is acquired through seminars sponsored by commercial products companies.
This course on Anatomy and Physiology is taught by a PhD who teaches this material full time in graduate and post-graduate programs, and who has no commercial products interests or potential biases. The student will be presented with an overview of human anatomy and physiology. The emphasis will be on anatomy and physiology of the trunk, upper and lower extremities. There will also be sections on anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, GI, muscular and skeletal systems as well.
Included in the course will be a section on pathophysiology of the more common diagnoses that prosthetists and orthotists will see in their patients. The final course segment will present a structured format for patient assessment and SOAP notes documentation.
